WINDSOR, CT – Momentum North America recently premiered its revolutionary new Super-Ram™ system on a next generation MVL-15iM-SR vertical turning lathe at IMTS 2024. The all-new Super Ram™ offers a giant leap forward in flexibility and efficiency with enhanced indexing capabilities and Capto tool changing flexibility. The system has also been designed to accommodate right-angle head attachments equipped with automatic live tool changing for mill/turn applications.
“IMTS was the perfect opportunity to debut Super-Ram™ with our partners at Select Machining Technologies,” stated John Boland, President of Momentum Machine Tools. “The response from customers has been extremely positive, especially with regard to the Capto tool changing flexibility.”
The Super-Ram™ system is now available across all Momentum 2-axis and mill/turn versions of their MVL vertical turning lathes, bringing several significant advantages:
- Enhanced Indexing Capabilities: The Super-Ram™ allows for indexing of up to four cutting edges per attachment, effectively quadrupling the capacity of the automatic tool changer (ATC). This innovation drastically reduces tool to tool time, making it possible to transition between inserts in 10 seconds, including sensor confirmations.
- Capto Tool Changing Flexibility: The system features a do-anything tooling attachment system that supports automatic change of sub-tools. At IMTS, a tooling attachment with self-changing C8 Capto capability was displayed, showcasing the versatility of the Super-Ram™.
- Right Angle Head Live Tool Changing: The Super-Ram™ is uniquely designed to accommodate right-angle head attachments equipped with automatic live tool changing for mill/turn applications. This capability allows for seamless integration of diverse machining operations within a single setup and without manual interventions.
Momentum held a ceremony at IMTS 2024 to thank the management team at SETCO, for their support in the development of Super-Ram™. Momentum partnered with SETCO to leverage their decades of experience building similar bridge-mill systems to aid in design choices and manufacture the key components. SETCO is a leader in the design and manufacture of spindles, milling heads and slides.
According to Michael Welsh, Product Manager at Select Machining Technologies, “The Super- Ram system better enables us to tailor solutions to meet our customer needs, often resulting in configurations that few machine tool builder can offer, such as a VTL with moving cross rails that can change Capto heads.”
Additional enhancements to the latest generation of MVL lathes include a single-tank coolant system to minimize footprint and complexity, a modular suite of Nippon Oil Pump coolant pump offerings, and a floor-mounted electrical cabinet designed with UL and NEC requirements in mind, including robust SCCR options.
All Momentum MVL lathes continue to feature their signature full-wrap, arc-shaped column which fully curves around the table to maximize mass, rigidity, and dampening. The full-wrap column also minimizes the distance between the column’s box ways and the cutting insert suspended from them. A single piece, extra-long cast iron saddle supports the ram during cutting, providing additional rigidity.
